Description

Unfortunately, the next episode has to be postponed due to organisation reasons. Apologizes for any inconvenience. Please stay tuned for the announcement of the new date!

For the second episode of From Colliders to Careers, we welcome Dr. Ulrike Williams, former FSP-ATLAS researcher at University of Freiburg and Technical University Dresden, later working on studies for CLIC at CERN and now Patent Attorney at GLAWE DELFS MOLL in Hamburg.

After transitioning from academia to patent law in 2021, Ulrike now works at the intersection of science, innovation, and intellectual property. In her talk, she will share insights into her move from particle physics to the legal profession, reflect on transferable skills from research, and explain how analytical thinking and technical expertise translate into the field of patent and utility model law.

What does it mean to protect innovation in areas such as physics, optics, computer-implemented inventions, or semiconductor technology? How technical is the daily work of a patent attorney, and which skills from academia truly make a difference in this field? Ulrike will offer insights what the training for becoming a patent attorney involves, into her professional practice, reflect on key competencies for a successful transition, and share practical advice for researchers considering a similar path. The session will conclude with an open Q&A and live graphical recording of the discussion, capturing key ideas and takeaways in real time.
