General news:

  • The forum members were approached earlier in the to year provide some inspiration what should be added to the EMC courses. Great thanks to Tomasz Podzorny who gave a lot of input.
  • Question of how to specify cable shielding performance for the tenders is being opened. The expert panel should come up with some guidelines. At the same we are sourcing equipment needed to perform cable shielding effectiveness measurements in the lab according to the established standards
  • The forum is asked to present a report to IEFC (likely on 8.12.) on organisation of the WG, what the EMC lab can offer, in terms of services to CERN, discuss maybe general recommendations and guidelines for experiment / facility installations and mention some examples of the investigation / conclusions from the past cases

Ongoing activities:

  • SMH16 generator in PS discussion ongoing. Cabling and additional shielding of high pulsed current cables
  • Meeting with cryo group on in-situ measurements to be done in LHC. Concerns sensitivity of cryo instrumentation in a vicinity of power converters/cables
  • ODH upgrade in LHC
  • Field measurements in SM18 (Jens will come back at the beginning of 2024 when they restart operation)
  • Laboratory is testing almost full time. That is great news for the laboratory, it is time to get bit more organized in terms of planning and documentation
  • HSE is preparing new safety rules for non-ionizing radiation for the whole CERN. Static magnetic field rules are being approved. Low and high frequency field safety documents are getting prepared
  • HSE ordered system from Wavecontrol to measure the fields covered by the safety rules above. Probes 1Hz to 90 GHz. There will be on site training early next year

To do:

  • Withing the EMC forum/lab wiki page, create a documentation section, which will collect all instrument manuals, methods and guidelines, and concrete recipes for various measurements
  • Create a GIT repository to store and share test code made by the users, e.g. automation of tests
  • As the number of activities is rising, think and implement a convenient calendar/booking system for the lab
