Workshop on communicating the physics of the smallest particles
Organizer:
Content of the workshop:
- Basics of science communication
- Preparing scientific content and methods for presentation to young people
- Interactive and participatory methods
- Tips and suitable materials for clearly conveying the physics of the smallest particles
- Theoretical learning units, practical exercises and reflection phases
- Exchange of experiences on masterclasses and student experiments for young people in particle physics, astroparticle physics and hadron and nuclear physics as well as local organization in Netzwerk Teilchenwelt
The workshop offers both impulses from external speakers and the time for best practice exchange among participants.
Each workshop phase will feature distinguished speakers from the field of science communication:
- Science journalist and lecturer on science communication Evelyn Stahl will introduce you to the theoretical background of science communication and conduct practical exercises.
- Substitute professor on particle physics Slavomira Stefkova will give an overview on slide design.
- Science communicator David Ohse will teach you how to develop games as a science communication tool.
Beside practical exercises, the workshop also includes a personal video training. In a 3-minute short presentation you will present a physics topic of your choice. Afterwards you will receive feedback from our science communication trainers, especially regarding the clarity and style of your presentation.
Participants:
The workshop targets Netzwerk Teilchenwelt facilitators (i.e. people that perform Masterclasses, workshops or labexperiments for (high-) school students and the general public in particle, astroparticle or hadron physics) and those who want to become one. Please note, that the number of participants is limited to 20. Also, it is our concern that as many locations of the network as possible are represented. Therefore, we ask you for a short letter of motivation (in the registration formular). During the workshop we will also take a few pictures to be used for informational purposes. Please fill the declaration of consent attached below and send them to bonn@teilchenwelt.de after you registered for the workshop.
Language:
This workshop is held primarily in English with an option to present and receive feedback on your presentation in German.
Costs:
The costs for the workshop are covered by Netzwerk Teilchenwelt, i.e. participation is free of charge for you. This also includes the accomodation in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef and part of your travel costs.
Preparation:
Please decide on a physics topic for your 3-minute presentation in advance. It can be related to your research or masterclass topic but it doesn't have to be. You don't need to prepare the slides in advance.
What to bring:
If you want to show slides during your presentation, it makes sense to bring your own laptop. Please let us know if you need a laptop but can't bring one. The Physikzentrum provides towels and bed sheets.
