Goal for today is to take a decision on the solution for the impregnation mold and V-pad assembly

SUMMARY:

  • The impregnation mold and V-pad will be made in 3 parts
  • The drawing dimensions correspond to nominal geometry (pole gap closed, with 600 mm straight section and the nominal coil end)
  • We will shim the straight section of the mold and V-pad only if the deviation in length exceeds X mm (to be clearly agreed by everybody).
  • Below X mm, we compensate for the coil overlength purely by placing glass fiber layers on top of the flared ends (as much as we can, with our granularity thickness). As usual we target to limit the non-charged resin below 0.3 mm.
  • Above X mm, the mold straight part will be shimmed and kept the same for all produced coils. Small length differences among coils can still be absorbed by the glass fiber filling in the ends.
The central mold part will be always indexed in the center of the coil.
  • Important: Whatever we do, we keep the same BOND mold for all coils produced.
  • The V-pad follows the same logic, and it will be shimmed (if needed) with a non-magnetic shim that covers the full V-pad cross section (we do not distinguish between magnetic pad and trapezoidal insert).
  • Modifications on 3D models and drawings will be made accordingly.

MQXF pole gaps:

INITIAL for old coils

2 mm/m initial gap for MQXFB

1.75 mm/m total contraction

NOW

2.7mm/m initial gap for MQXFB

1.47 mm/m total contraction
