Quick recap
The working group meeting focused on sharing training and development practices across EIROforum organizations, with the new member Tony from ESS introducing the institution. Tony provided an overview of ESS, including its facility, science programs, and current construction status, while Elizabeth presented CERN's comprehensive learning ecosystem, including their Learning Hub, leadership development programs, and approaches to measuring training impact. The group discussed platform migrations, with both CERN and ESS planning transitions to new systems, and Eva announced a planned workshop on maintenance for June 9-10, seeking speakers to share best practices on managing and organizing maintenance activities, particularly for equipment that isn't readily accessible.

The meeting focused on welcoming new members and discussing training initiatives across EIROforum organizations. Eva introduced a new SharePoint site created to organize and share training materials, documents, and resources across EIROforum organizations. The group discussed plans to upload training materials, presentations, and documents to the site for easier access and collaboration.
Introduction of ESS
Tony from ESS presented an overview of ESS facilities and operations, highlighting its role as a neutron source for scientific research. Tony agreed to provide more details about ESS's training and leadership development programs in a future meeting.
CERN Training Programme
Elizabeth presented on the context and challenges of learning and development at CERN, highlighting key factors such as a diverse workforce, technological disruptions, rising costs, and limited resources. She discussed the need to balance demands for learning services while managing constraints, including the integration of AI tools and supporting different generations in the workplace. Elizabeth also touched on the importance of upskilling and reskilling employees to address evolving skills needs and support career development.
Elizabeth further discussed CERN's robust learning and development framework, highlighting their strategic approach with 8-9 staff members working on learning, including safety training and leadership development. She explained their governance structure, with the CERN Learning Board meeting twice yearly and departmental training officers serving as eyes and ears across departments. Elizabeth outlined their three main focus areas: learning content portfolio, culture and engagement including onboarding programs like "Connecting the Dots," and digital analytics to measure learning impact and ROI.
Elizabeth presented an overview of CERN's learning and development ecosystem, highlighting their portfolio of 191 courses with 5,800 participations and 30,000 enrollments. She focused particularly on leadership development, explaining their 3S model which includes stepping in (leading self), leading one-to-one (small teams), and leading larger groups. Elizabeth emphasized the importance of preparing leaders for the challenges of managing teams at CERN, noting that while many technical experts transition to leadership roles, they often need additional support and preparation.
Elizabeth presented CERN's leadership development framework, outlining three levels from managing individuals to leading multiple teams at a strategic level. She described the core programs available through the Coaching Hub, including mandatory leadership training and optional advanced courses. Elizabeth also discussed the implementation of Learning Profiles to help guide leaders through their development journey, noting an increase in training participation after this initiative was introduced. She concluded by mentioning CERN's first leadership assessments conducted last year in conjunction with an external company, Hudson.
The meeting focused on discussing training and learning platforms at CERN. Elizabeth shared details about CERN's approach to measuring training impact, including a new assessment method for their "Communicating with Impact" course for mid-level managers. The group discussed challenges around managing technical staff who transition to leadership roles, with Eva and Angela sharing their experiences with similar issues.
AoB
The conversation ended with Eva announcing a planned workshop on maintenance for June 9-10, seeking speakers from Euroforum members to discuss general maintenance strategies and remote maintenance approaches.
