Potential fire detector locations in TCC8/ECN3

Europe/Zurich

Attendees: Claudia, Jean-Louis, Boris, Michael, Dominika, Deborah, Luigi, Gemma

Claudia explained the project's focus on finding an underground solution that avoids radiation exposure and space constraints above ground, while Jean-Louis emphasized the importance of ensuring system reliability and operational continuity.

Dominika presented the results of a preliminary R2E assessment for potential fire detector locations, focusing on three areas: technical gallery (GHN300) and shaft. Initial R2E assessments suggest that approximately 10 cm of polyethylene shielding may be needed for COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) electronics due to neutron exposure.

Actionable Points:

  • Boris to provide locations of existing ASDs around the LHC for simulation comparison.
  • Dominika to extend simulations to other proposed locations: the top floor of the shaft and upstream locations.
  • Gemma to investigate the geometry of the shaft for optimal technical equipment placement.
  • Boris/Michael to review the detector system strategy: determine the number of detectors needed and evaluate combining ASDs in safe locations with longer ASDs (exceeding 100-meter limitation) concerning accessibility and maintainability.
  • Boris/Michael to evaluate if irradiation testing of the detectors is required.
