Notes from HI-ECN3 - BDF Magnetised Hadron Stopper (MHS) Discussion with TE-MSC

  • Clear motivation from (i) target design optimisation and (ii) sc options for muon shield to study a shorter MHS of length 2.5 m with as high a field as reasonable achievable (> 1.8 T)
    • Action: Matt to collect info from Claudia/JL/Rui and SHiP and update FS
  • A water-cooled copper design with organic insulator looks suited and makes connecting to the existing magnet cooling circuit (K12 being dismantled)
  • A dual coil design looks promising for redundancy:
    • Details of the location of the redundant coil to be studied as part of
  • Energy efficiency does not look to be so important for the design -> up tot about 5 kW in DC
  • Add the following points to the FS and circulate on EDMS:
    • MHS is NOT in vacuum
    • Lifting capacity of 30t of crane
    • Importance of establishing the assembly / disassembly procedure with final dismantling in mind
    • Action: Matt
  • MHS budget: 1250 MCHF as part of WP4
    • Coil(s)
    • Yoke material (SS/iron?)
    • Services (connections/piping)
    • Conceptual / mechanical / integration design work linked to WP4
  • Timeline:
    • TDR to be published early 2026: Action Matt to contact editorial team
    • Final design detailed enough to allow integration studies to be completed (WP4)
    • Cost & schedule needed for MTP26
  • BC for MHS to be provided to TE-MSC via WP4:
    • Action: Matt and JL
