Summary

Working Group 1 Kickoff Meeting

The meeting began with technical difficulties in audio and slide sharing, which were eventually resolved. Pietro welcomed everyone to the kickoff meeting of Working Group 1 and introduced a few prepared slides to guide the discussion. The group agreed to wait a few minutes for more participants to join before proceeding with the meeting.

COST Action Working Group Leadership

Pietro and Valentina were appointed as leaders of Working Group 1 to guide discussions and stimulate interactions towards achieving the objectives of the COST Action network. They outlined the group's mandate, which includes deploying models for reconstruction and analysis in collider physics, focusing on detector reconstruction, anomaly detection, and physics-informed networks. The group aims to release open benchmarks and develop low-latency inference chains for online selection. They also plan to coordinate with other working groups, particularly Working Group 3 for theory-driven use cases and Working Group 4 for computation, and to organize conferences like the CORFU Workshop on future accelerators. Participants were encouraged to suggest topics for discussion and tutorials on event simulation, data analysis, or specific machine learning topics to support the group's objectives.

Research Synergies and Collaboration Planning

The meeting focused on discussing ongoing projects and potential synergies with other research initiatives. Riccardo highlighted the work of CMS on edge deep learning for particle physics and mentioned collaborations with Benedict Meyer, inviting him to present their work at the upcoming kickoff meeting. Valentina emphasized the importance of networking and leveraging existing research efforts, noting that not all participants are involved in LHC particle physics. The group agreed to use part of the meeting time to get a better understanding of attendees' backgrounds and to encourage participation in the working groups.

ML in Particle Physics Collaboration

The meeting introduced participants from various institutions, including theoretical physicists, experimental physicists, and computer scientists, who shared their expertise and interests in machine learning applications in particle physics. Ricardo Torre, the action chair, emphasized the importance of collaboration and highlighted the need for participants to contribute to a shared website and code repository. The group discussed the potential for regular meetings, with a consensus to hold the next meeting on March 6th, and agreed to create a Google Doc for collecting ideas and resources to enhance collaboration. Participants also discussed the possibility of inviting experts from future collider experiments to future meetings.
