LHC Monte Carlo WG subgroup meeting – data sharing and new workflows

Europe/Zurich
Enrico Bothmann (CERN)
Description

A meeting to discuss potential concrete Monte Carlo sample sharing efforts for the near future:

  1. Share BSM samples at particle level that will be generated by the Dark Showers task force in the Dark Matter Working Group
  2. Share MiNNLOps and bb4l setups/samples at parton level for top physics
  3. Share parton level samples generated by theory groups – there are occasionally large samples generated which are sometimes uploaded to Zenodo … but what would be the best practice going forward?

Note that this is not a very long meeting – the idea is to mostly to kick off further investigations and actions, and to see if there is overlap in the considerations among these potential efforts, but not to discuss things in-depth.

Ideally, we set up groups that contain people from the involved experiments and theory tools to kick off efforts for 1. and 2., and have a quick discussion to identify the best way forward for 3. No formal presentations are needed – we can focus on discussion and planning to kick off concrete actions.

For the time being, this is planned as a virtual meeting.

      Introduction 5m
    • 15:35 16:05
      Parton-level MiNNLOps and bb4l setups/samples for top physics 30m

Explore if a common effort can be started, in coordination with the LHCtopWG, and with interested persons of ATLAS and CMS and related theory groups.

What would need to happen for an agreement to share such setups/samples? Whom to involve? How and where to share samples and setups? Should this be bilateral or can it be shared beyond as Open Data?

Speakers: Dominic Hirschbuehl (Bergische Universitaet Wuppertal (DE)), Si Hyun Jeon (Boston University (US))
    • 16:05 16:15
Large parton-level samples generated by theory groups 10m

E.g., large high-multiplicity parton-level DY samples from HPC/GPU resources ... can this be shared as Open Data? What labels/categories to use? How to chunk the data best to be useful?

Speakers: Christian Gutschow (UCL (UK)), Enrico Bothmann (CERN)
    • 16:15 16:45
Particle-level BSM samples for Dark Showers 30m

These samples will be generated by the Dark Showers task force in the Dark Matter Working Group (including both ATLAS and CMS members).

What eos space to use/do we need to move the data? If shared via the Open Data portal, do we need a "theory" category? Which format and how to convert? How to tag the samples?

Speakers: Caterina Doglioni (The University of Manchester (GB)), Cesare Cazzaniga (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DE)), Jackson Carl Burzynski (University of Oklahoma (US)), Sukanya Sinha (The University of Manchester (GB)), Zach Marshall (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. (US))
