We are stoked that we managed to put this event together for you!

So now we are happy to announce the first edition of the CERN Climbing Club Gear Destruction.

This event is a shared effort of CEC and EN-MME-MM (Materials Division)

When: 26.10.2023 at 16:00

Where: Bulding 112 at CERN, exact room will be announced.

Registration: If you would like to participate in person, you need to register! Please do so under this event. There is a limit of 15 participants. So in case you registered but in the meantime realised that you won't be able to make it, please let us know so that we can free the spot for someone else.

ZOOM: Most likely, the whole event will be broadcasted on Zoom. The link can be found in the agenda.

If the demand is really high we will try to find another date in November/December to give more people the opportunity to follow the event in person.

As promised, here is some additional information:

What is it about?

For the Gear Destruction Event we gather old gear that we would like to test or destroy and test it at CERN. For this, we are collaborating with a Metrology group at CERN (EN-MME-MM), who will help us manage and organise the tests we are interested in. We are planning to hold one or two sessions where some of you can assist and see the tests live. For this, we will have approximately 15 slots per session, however we will also broadcast it online, so that remote connection is also a possibility.  

Ok, so then, what are we planning to do?

So far, we have been gathering ideas and materials from some of the members. The gear we are planning to test includes carabiners, quickdraws, ropes… 

Only for fun?

No! But also!

We are destroying the gear because we want to learn something! First and foremost, it should hopefully be an impressive demonstration, how climbing gear protects you.

But more importantly, we want to try and find out what the limits are! Because knowing the limits of yourself but also of your gear is absolutely crucial in climbing.

We will come back to with more information once your registration is complete.
