Challenges in the field of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Description

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an analytical technique for all types of matter including gas, solid and liquid. In laser ablation, the interaction of a short and intense laser pulse with any target leads to the removal of material from the target surface and forms a plasma plume. The laser generated plasma plume cools down and emits radiation due transitions of electrons in the excited states in atoms and ions. This technique (LIBS) has low limit of detection as compared to other analytical techniques. There are several efforts has been made for the improvement of LOD of LIBS. There are some reports that dual pulse LIBS and Resonance LIBS can be used to the enhance the emission intensity of laser generated plasma. The effect of external fields on the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy will be discussed. The laser generated plasma can be confined by applying an appropriate magnetic field. The magnetic confinement of laser generated plasma also depends on the laser irradiance used for ablation. The various factors influencing the magnetic confinement of laser generated plasma will be discussed. The effect of external electric field on LIBS will also be presented.
