Phd students in astronomy are invited to attend the Summer School on "Exoplanets and astrostatistical analysis techniques", sponsored by the MW-GAIA-COST Action and hosted by the department of astronomy at the university of Geneva, Switzerland.
The school will provide a state-of-the-art picture of the astrostatistical data analysis techniques in the field of exoplanet research. It will cover various modern techniques that are currently used to detect and characterize extrasolar planets, including the spectroscopic radial velocity method, the photometric transit method, the astrometric orbit detection method. The astrometric method will become particularly relevant with the upcoming data releases of the Gaia space mission. The school will introduce the students to the relevant astrostatistical background given the particular noise properties of astrophysical datasets, as well as give them hands-on experience with real and synthetic datasets. Participants will learn the limitations of each method and the biases it introduces in the derived sample of exoplanets. The students will have the opportunity to discuss all of these topics with world experts in the field.

Prerequisites to attend the school : Intermediate level in Python and scientific programming. Personal laptops are required as Python's hands-on session will done using JupyterLab on JupyterHub.
Reaching the observatory : The Geneva Observatory is located at Chemin de Pegasi, 51b; 1290 Versoix, Switzerland and the school will be held in the "Astrotech - Jura & Lac" rooms.
It can be reached by public transport using trains (CCF) to Versoix or Coppet and then Buses from either places.

Social events :
- A school dinner will be organized Downton Geneva Tuesday, Sept 13th.
- On Thursday, Sept 15th at 18h00, a social run of 5 km - with possible extensions - will be organized followed by a social drink. The drink is of course open to those who are not going for the run !
Fees : The school is free as it is funded by the MW-GAIA-COST initiative and the department of astronomy of the University of Geneva. However, to cover the prices of lunches at the observatory and the school dinner, we will ask you for a contribution of 130 CHF that can be paid online using the following link : online paiment
Accomodation:there are plenty of hotels in Geneva, especially close to the Cornavin train station. The Lake Geneva hotel, located in Versoix, is a good but very expensive choice. Hotel les balances and Auberge du Lion d'Or in Versoix are cheaper options, while Hotel Suisse next to Cornavin train station in Geneva offer special prices for Geneva Observatory visitors.
You can also look in Nyon (CH) or anywhere close to a train-station between Geneva and Gland.
Airbnb is also possibility. I would look for Versoix (CH) or Sauverny (F) since there are bus connections from those places or again, anywhere close to a train-station between Geneva and Gland.
Youth hostel / Auberge de Jeunesses : Youth Hostel in Switzerland are good and could also be an option. Here is are two links :

There are several more affordable places in nearby France (Divonne les bains, Ferney Voltaire) but without good public transport. It can still be an option, for those of you who have a car or are ready to rent a bike
