Abstract: In the last 20 years the data of the Pierre Auger Observatory have totally changed the paradigm for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays. I will detail what the situation was when the Observatory was planned, what results were obtained and what is the current status, together with the ongoing upgrading plans. I will end by showcasing the development of Astroparticle physics in Latin America following the installation of the Observatory in Argentina and what are the plans for the construction of a major international underground laboratory in the Andes.
