Abstract:
Exotic atoms are two- or three-body atomic systems that consist of at least one particle other than electrons, protons and neutrons. Investigation of these neutral bound systems with precision methods provides a tool to probe the symmetries of the Standard Model, determine fundamental constants, and possibly shed light to beyond-SM phenomena. In this talk we introduce exotic atoms synthesized in accelerator facilities at PSI and CERN using low energy muons (μ⁺), pions (π⁻), or antiprotons (). Laser spectroscopy of metastable antiprotonic helium (p̄He = p̄+He⁺⁺+e⁻) and pionic helium (πHe = π⁻+He⁺⁺+e⁻) atoms provided a precision method to determine the antiproton and pion masses in terms of the electron mass. In a new experiment at PSI we aspire to synthesize a cold atomic beam of muonium (Mu = μ⁺ + e⁻), and carry out a free fall experiment to measure directly the gravitational interaction of (anti-)leptons.
