Description

Tracking and identification of jets originating from b quarks (b-tagging) will likely continue to be a key element of many physics analyses at the upgraded HL-LHC where much higher pileup can significantly reduce the performance. An upgrade of the CMS pixel detector proposed for the Phase 1 HL-LHC should enable CMS to maintain the current level of b-tagging performance even in the presence of very high pileup. Results of Monte Carlo simulation studies with an upgrade CMS pixel detector will be presented for tracking and b-tagging performance and compared to that for the current CMS detector.
