GridPP Technical Meeting - Network monitoring
Virtual Only
Weekly meeting slot for technical topics. We will try and focus on one topic per meeting. We will announce at the Tuesday Ops meeting if this meeting is going ahead and if so the topic to be discussed.
There was a discussion about the potential of more sites joining the LHCONE. If it is technically feasible then it offers benefits to both performance and monitoring.

Actions:
- All sites to investigate how hard it would be to join LHCONE.
- Duncan Rand will talk to JISC about accessing their monitoring (JISC share the network monitoring of each site link with admins).
Site Round Table
Imperial
Has internal monitoring of the Tier-2 traffic.
Lancaster
Has internal monitoring and also access to the external link although this is a bit flakey.
Manchester
Has internal monitoring of the uplink to janet, with the upgrade and the connection being moved to the university it will require revision.
RHUL
Given our experience with getting central IT to support IPV6 at RHUL I'm not optimistic about LHCONE either, so I wouldn't appreciate it becoming a requirement. Our current 10Gb/s network links are exclusively used for Tier2 and monitored on JISC Netsight, but I don't know how to provide access to that data or download it. We have to transition to a storageless site in the next few years so expect current usage is a bad guide to future needs.
Glasgow
Nothing in production at present, but plans to expand previous pre-migration development systems to the Tier2 site. This would give visibility of network performance within the Tier2, and of the link to campus.
We have no access to monitoring at the campus or Janet level. The university is currently undertaking a complete review of networking, including a renewal of infrastructure, so everything beyond the Tier2 is subject to change within the next couple of years.
