Description

Abstract:

High-speed photonic technologies and their co-integration with electronics are in the focus of current research towards future optical communication systems. In this presentation, plasmonics as a promising photonic platform is introduced, which does not only feature high-speed modulators and detectors, but also compactness, cost- and energy-efficiency, and compatibility with CMOS electronics. Furthermore, photonic-electronic integration concepts are reviewed, and advantages and challenges are discussed. Finally, the integration of plasmonics with electronics in hybrid assemblies or in a monolithic manner is presented as an example of state-of-the-art transmitters.
