REMOTE: Geodetic metrology for future accelerators - Geodetic infrastructure for new accelerator projects, (3/5)

Abstract 

The geodetic infrastructure is a key part of new accelerator projects, for both site investigations, civil engineering and metrology works. This lecture will present requirements and particularities of such projects and current applications for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Each major extension of the CERN accelerators (like the construction of the SPS and the LEP) implied modifications of the reference system following an increasing need of accuracy and the improvement of the geodetic knowledge and practices. The FCC will extend the geographic area of the CERN facilities from 70 km2 to 1000 km2 therefore the definition of the geodetic system, the reference network and the geoid model must be adapted and upgraded. New terrestrial and satellites techniques and instruments allow to reach higher accuracy even for larger projects. This lecture will focus on the strategy adopted to define and realize the new geodetic infrastructure and the associated challenges.

Short Bio Benjamin Weyer

Benjamin Weyer is a geodetic engineer at CERN in the BE-GM group. His work focuses on the geodetic aspects of the FCC, in collaboration with ETH Zurich, IGN and Swisstopo. His activity is centered on the definition of the geodetic system, field observations and improvement of the CERN geodetic transformation software.Benjamin Weyer works at CERN since 2021. Before, he was a geodetic engineer at Fugro France for 5 years, where he participated in the implementation of large geodetic infrastructure in various countries (Ethiopia, Uganda, United Arab Emirates). He carried out and managed GNSS, levelling and gravity survey campaigns and computed geodetic and levelling networks and geoid models.
