Description

Lecturer: Dr Eamonn Daly

Abstract:
This presentation goes through a non-exhaustive survey of some interesting future missions and developments in the space domain which have interesting radiation concerns, These development include large science missions but also human spaceflight and dramatic changes in commercial space activities.

Eamonn Daly - Biography
Eamonn Daly received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Exeter and a Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from the University of Manchester. After some time in industry, working on analytical equipment development, he Joined ESA in 1983 to establish a capability for space environment analysis and specification. He was with ESA for 35 years until he retired in 2018. For a large part of that time he was the head of the Space Environments and Effects Section in the “technical” directorate of ESA at its ESTEC site in the Netherlands. The section’s function was to support the development of all ESA missions, and to engage in technology research, standards preparation, training, etc. to support its function. The section dealt with radiation environments and effects, but also issues related to other space environments, including plasmas, microparticles (small debris and micrometeoroids) and atmospheres. In the later part of his career with ESA he was also a senior advisor and lead engineer.
