Design and Development of the Transnational Access Web Portal for RADNEXT EU-Project 20m

The EU-funded project RADNEXT (RADiation facility Network for the EXploration of effects for indusTry and research), kicked-off in June 2021, aims at increasing and optimizing the access of researchers to a network of irradiation facilities to test state-of-the-art microelectronic components to be used in areas such as aerospace, automotive, the Internet of Things, nuclear dismantling, High Energy Physics and medicine among others. One aspect of this optimization will be based on a common entry-point to the RADNEXT irradiation facility network (Transnational Access web portal) in which the users can define, explain, and request their irradiation campaigns. Based on the CERN Irradiation facilities database, developed by the IRRAD team in EP-DT and operational since 2017, the first part of the summer student project was to extend this database with additional information about the RADNEXT facilities. In the second part, a prototype of the web portal was set up to assist users in the submission of their request for experiments.

Investigation of monolithic CMOS pixel sensors with a hexagonal pixel design using finite-element and Monte Carlo simulations 20m

To fulfil the demanding requirements for future High Energy Physics vertex and tracking detectors, silicon pixel detector technologies are being developed and optimised. For the prediction of the performance of these new designs, simulation tools are essential. Finite-element simulations have indicated a promising performance of silicon pixel sensors featuring an hexagonal pixel design. However, for a full simulation of these devices not only a precise description of the highly complex electric field in the sensor is required, but also a fast event simulation rate, which is achievable by combining finite-element simulations with a Monte Carlo simulation approach. In this summer student project, a combination of finite-element and Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the hexagonal pixel design have been performed. The student improved and benchmarked the implementation of the hexagonal pixel layout in the simulation framework. He evaluated also the performance of the hexagonal design compared to standard rectangular pixels, which will provide meaningful input to the design of future sensors.
