SRF Seminar: New and interesting CryoLab results from RF measurements of Niobium-on-Copper

SRF  R&D seminars are seen as a place to discuss subjects and ideas that are interesting, exciting and or novel. The seminars are informal and seen as a place for open discussion, and topics presented can range from first ideas, through work in progress, to presentation of final results.

      New RF results from Niobium-on-Copper 40m

      The first Nb/Cu SRF cavities were produced at CERN in the 80’s decade. This technology offered several advantages with respect to the bulk Nb cavities. However, a degradation in the performance with increasing accelerating fields (known as Q-slope) was observed, and this limited the application of this promising technology to low gradient accelerators. Back then, nevertheless, we were already confident that the Q-slope can be overcome.

      It has been a year since the first Nb/Cu seamless cavity was tested at the CERN Cryolab. The new R&D era in cavity testing had started and several astonishing results were waiting for us. Before that, we had to battle the RF with injuries in our coating and Q-drops in the mood, but finally we succeeded, and the glory was engraved on a copper billet. Still far from the end, in this presentation we give a glimpse of the records accomplished and the particularities observed during the tests. We also point out the strategy followed as well as the evidences that determine the next steps. At the same time, we open the discussion to our audience in order to continue writing the history.
