The aim of virtualization working group is to identify key use cases with in EN-ICE group that could deployed on virtual machines, and evaluation of existing solutions. This working group will finally propose a set of recommendations and guidelines for the group users about available virtualization options available both at CERN and with in the group.

Thursday 17 June

14:30 → 16:00 Kick off discussion

This was the first meeting held in the group to present the value of virtualization and available tools.

Monday 5 July

17:05 → 18:05 Virtualization for EN-ICE

This presentation was given to EN-ICE group meeting to formally start the evaluation process in the group. The outcome of this meeting was the creation of the working group.

* each section will report by next Thursday (30th Sept 2010) a list of use cases and concrete numbers that how many virtual machines are required
* each section will appoint one or two person for the next working group meetings
* EN-ICE group/section leaders will pursue the discussions with Cern Virtualization Infrastructure (CVI) and BE-CO project to see how our particular use cases could be accommodated.
* It was discussed in the meeting that why not to use Microsoft solution, currently used by CVI, for our local cluster if a need arises. But there remains an issue of Linux support.
* A local cluster might be set up in EN-ICE with VMWare Workstation for Linux support- this is still pending and to be decided later.
* It was also agreed that once a decision is taken by EN-ICE management, then a user guidelines will be produced for each set of use cases precising what particular solution will be best (CVI, EN-ICE cluster or local setup).

Friday 29 October

14:30 → 16:00 Virtualization Working Group Meeting Update

Another round of discussions were held after the SLM meetings from last week.

1) CVI: Win Xp and Win7 images described for PVSS, Labview, Unity and Step7 software.

2) CVI: SLC5 (32/64bit) is sufficient for most of use cases.

3) BE-CO Linux images: this has to be dealt separately and will try to organize the meeting between stake holders. (Piotr will look into PVSS H/W code issue).

4) VMWare workstations licenses will be distributed on-demand (via SIC) to those whose needs can't be met with either CVI or Virtual box.
5) Initially a 2TB of DFS workspace will be requested to host images for both Virtual Box and Workstation which would be used with in the group.

Tuesday 16 November

14:30 → 15:30 Virtualization Working Group: Focus BE-CO Linux Deployment

The focus of this meeting is to fully understand the details of BE-CO linux, their specific configurations on top of SLC, and to resolve GPN/TN related issues for PVSS and for other CCC applications tested by SCD and PLC sections.

Following are minutes of the meeting with BE-CO.

• BE-CO has agreed to provide access to their virtual infrastructure for BE-CO-Linux machines up to 15 VM's.
• All requests for BE-CO machines either for development or operations (either on TN or GPN) will be managed via our existing point-man Fredrick Bernard who will be able to request these machines for individual users.
• For standard SLC4/5 VM's, EN-ICE would have to manage it. This is already done by users either by using their local machines (via VMWare or Virtual Box) or on CVI infrastructure.
