MEETING: Plan of activities for CLIC prototypes (MBQ and QD0)
LOCATION: CERN 30-5-039 at 10h00 on 28 September 2010
PRESENTS: Michele Modena; Andrea Jeremie; Kurt Artoos; Marco Buzio; Michael Struik; Guillaume Deleglise; Antony Newborough; Alexey Vorozhtsov; Evgeny Solodko; Antonio Bartalesi; Pierre Alexandre Thonet; Juan Garcia Perez
(ABSENT JUSTIFIED: Raphael Leuxe)
MINUTES:
1) Status of MBQ prototypes procurement: It was reminded (Michele, Mike, Antony):
- 10 coils (5 LONG and 5 SHORT) at CERN and receptioned
- 10 quadrants (5 LONG and 5 SHORT) at CERN at Metrology Lab. They have surely geometric out of tolerance, hard technical and commercial discussion expected
- Special tooling (Raphael): procured
- Ancillary pieces: majority of the drawings completed; procurement will follow (Raphael).
2) Status of procurement for Stabilization components:
Kurt commented the status: “best estimations” are:
- Actuators available at CERN for Nov 2010
- Possible start of stab. test on SHORT (Type1) MBQ : Jan 2011
- Possible start of stab. tests on LONG (type 4) MBQ: March 2011 (last date for eventual results in CDR).
3) Selection of testing site at CERN: After Summer discussion and inspections on site (Michele, Kurt, Marco) ISR Tunnel ( “I8” at Magnetic Measurement Labs) is at the moment the preferred location. First ground noise measurements done are encouraging. Other measurements are planned during this week.
4) Magnetic Measurements (see attached SLIDES): Marco gave a complete presentation on what is now available and what is under development, with indication of what we can obtain in order of measurements of: G, Gdl, multipole content and the expected precisions.
“Measurement difficulties” toward magnet radius reduction go with ~ r^3 , so considering the precision required asked, task is not evident
For the rotating coils system the delivery of the “raw” sandwich with 80 PCB is expected in these days. Machining will follow and procurement of other components is under way.
“Best estimation”: first measuring test at the end of the year (2010).
5) Mentioned the news (from H.Schmickler at the last CTC) about the possibility to test with beam in 2013 the stabilization of a Type1 (SHORT) MBQ at Jefferson Lab (VA-USA).
6) Revised status of procurement of QD0 prototype: Permendur part and PM blocks under procurement, as also under procurement tooling for winding and other components (mandrel, return yokes etc.). We could expect to start the assembly in Spring 2011
7) Status of studies for the design of the full-size version (~ 2.7 m length ) of QD0: A. Bartalesi that joined us as Fellow in July, is working on the mechanical structure. He will contact LAPP colleagues to work in coordination with them as regarding QD0 stabilization requirements.
8) Concerning the SHORT TERM PLAN for MBQ prototypes tests it was decided to proceed ASAP (following completion of procurement and discussion with Suppliers about the out of tolerances problem) with the assembly of:
a) 1 single LONG quadrant/coil assembly: to be transport to LAPP for vibration tests w and w/o cooling circuit running.
b) 1 complete LONG magnet for global test (validation of the design, and in priority stabilization studies)
c) 1 complete SHORT magnet for global test (magnetic measurement and stabilization studies).
This program will be confirmed following the commercial discussion with the Dutch supplier. Plan details will be further discussed if needed.
9) In the mean time we hope to quickly converge with the Czech supplier for the final grinding of 4 quadrants for the 2nd SHORT prototypes.
10) Depending from the technical and commercial discussions with the two Suppliers we hope to converge soon also on the procurement of the 4 quadrants for the 2nd LONG prototype.
