AD electron cooler gun and collector review
The new AD electron cooler is designed to operate at electron beam energies up to 68 keV. A test stand has been constructed to validate and optimise the electron gun and electron beam collector. It has been designed to operate up to a maximum voltage of 80 kV.
Initial tests of the collector, compatible with the present and future coolers, had to be abandoned due high voltage breakdowns. Some minor modifications were made to mitigate this effect but no significant improvement was observed. An upgrade to the design is under preparation and should be ready for testing in February 2022.

Review charges:
1. What improvements, if any, can be made to the test stand to ensure the stable running of the installation?
2. Is the gun design (dimensions of the electrodes, distance between potentials, choice of materials etc.) optimised to generate an electron beam at a voltage of 68 kV?
3. Is the upgrade of the electron beam collector sufficient to operate the device at 70 kV? Is copper the right material to use in high voltage vacuum devices?
