The CERN Accelerator School and the CERN School of Computing are joining efforts to suggest a topical course on a subject, which finds an ever growing and large application in accelerator technology and the electronics of physics detectors: The use of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) for digital signal processing.

The course is prepared in close collaboration with the technical university of Göttingen.

The aim of the course is to introduce newcomers in this field into the basic technology, related design tools and also the basics of digital signal processing. Furthermore advanced subjects and specific applications from the accelerator domain as well as high enrgy physics (Triggers, data readout, online reconstruction of events) will be treated, such that more advanced students can also find lots of new information.

The course proposes classical lectures in the mornings and a Hands-ON course in the afternoon, during which students can work on FPGA evaluation boards and solve predefined problems by coding themselves. The problems to be solved are of increasing complexity, such that students at every level can be fully involved.
