Abstract: Measurement of the Higgs boson coupling to the charm quark provides a crucial test of the fermion mass generation mechanism in the Standard Model. This talk presents the latest CMS search for the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of charm quarks using the full Run 2 data set. Novel concepts in charm jet reconstruction, identification and calibration, and search design, have been developed for this search, leading to the most stringent constraint on the Higgs-charm coupling to date. The search is validated by measuring the Z boson decay to charm quarks and yields the first observation of this process at a hadron collider. Prospects at the future HL-LHC and further improvements on the deep learning techniques that powered this search will also be discussed.
