Experimental Particle and Astro-Particle Physics Seminar
Abstract: The discovery of neutrino oscillations at the turn of the century uncovered limitations in our understanding of fundamental physics, and required an extension to the Standard Model of particle physics to accommodate non-zero neutrino masses and a "three-neutrino oscillation" picture. At the same time, a number of experimental neutrino anomalies that have accumulated over the last two decades suggest that new physics, beyond the three-neutrino picture, may also be at play. Interpretations of these anomalies range from conventional physics explanations, to hypothesized “sterile" neutrinos, and to new neutrino couplings with a hypothesized “dark particle sector". With the goal of providing a resolution to these anomalies, an expansive Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) experimental program has been launched at U.S. Fermi National Lab. This talk will review recent results from the first of the SBN experiments (MicroBooNE) and future physics prospects for the upcoming SBN program.
