Discussion over the field target
- DT noticed that the field in the demonstrator is only 3T, with peak field at 4.2T on conductor.
- This could be an issue as a 4T magnet was "sold".
- It seems extremely inefficient. In order to get 4T inside, one would need up to 5T in conductor.
- the inefficiency comes from the ratio of the aperture over the length
- We should try to get the field to 4T inside
- proposing an operation at 90% SS
- reducing the aperture
- reducing the angle and consequently the overall length of the magnet
Actions for GK: scan the area of aperture and angle in order to get closer to 4T inside without increasing the peak field too much.
Compute the integrated field (for 5 T peak field on the conductor) as a function of the winding angle for :
- 90° bending angle and 236 mm diameter
- 45° bending angle and 100 mm diameter
Design advancements by GK
- tapered former/coil idea to get a conical joint
- error correction in the demonstrator design
- leads impact improvements, idea to get the leads out of the coil plane
- adapting the angle of the second layer to equal the length of the first layer
R&D update by AH
- List of technological choices
- Small box program
- important first is the stacking feasibility
- do whatever resin is available (PU, stycast, ...)
- Subscale program
- AH still needs the designs. GK has them,
- Action: AH should ask for them in separate discussion
- Resistive CCT program
- The first small dipole is ready for production, former in 3D and flanges in G10.
- The CLIC power unit is good to start with but our need are going towards higher capacitance at lower voltage. DT believes we could adapt a capacitance rack while keeping the electronic.
- AF wonders about the purpose of this program. It is true that it lost a lot of purpose since the combined function is not the target. Still, it is a good way to produce small field and develop processes.
Round cable developments by AH
- First proposals from CGP
- external diameters ranging from 3 to 5 mm
- inside wire are non insulated 0.85 or 0.48 mm
- insulated copper core
- possibilities to twist in different direction if multiple steps (longer and more expensive)
- other design includes insulated wires in the cable
- Table of selected configurations with the required current and length
- Current in cable is very high (4.4 kA)
- We should consider 2 options
- non insulated 0.48 mm wire, 3 mm cable
- insulated 0.85 mm wire, 4 mm cable
Action: AH works on finding a configuration with 2.5 kA maximum. GK could start making a model with the round cables and see what it gives.
Action: AH checks availability of of LHC strand with SCD.
Afterwards, we could propose something more solid to SCD in order to start a proper cable development.
