22/02/2022 ad-hoc LNO meeting for news and round table discussion

News, Rogelio :
---------------
The alignment team agreed with the recommendation made in out last meeting, https://indico.cern.ch/event/1123199/ on February 2.
There has been follow up of possibilities to provide corrections in case of MQSX failures. Tobias looked in warm magnet solutions and Stephane in kind of achromatic coupling compensation possibly involving changes of powering schemes.
Critical items included in the Chamonix closeout related to HL-LHC were magnet (11 T) R&D and a potential increase in cost for RF to overcome power limitations.
There has been a board for a post in this section with many good candidates making it hard to choose. The selected candidate will start in April. There is hope to have another post for LNO next year.
The section loses Renjun Yang who returned to China.
Rogelio encourages to start writing IPAC papers as soon as possible, also in view of the busy LHC recommissioning. The group deadline can be expected for May. The booster started last Friday ahead of schedule. It appears that the BWS alignment error doubled to 12 mrad by applying the alignment correction in the wrong direction. The horizontal orbit is worse than in the previous run. A short realignment campaign will likely have to be scheduled soon.
There has been a meeting with students in the group. One outcome aiming to help the students is the recommendation that the students always prepare yearly progress reports, also in cases where this is not required by the university.

Round table discussion, all :
-----------------------------
Mael is working on nonlinear detuning, running PTC, comparing with expectations from Hamiltonian theory,
and checking the origin of significant changes in Q'' when going from non-ATS to ATS optics.

Jacqueline studies decoherence in lepton machines and is writing a draft paper.

Felix writes scripts for knobs and quick analysis packages relevant for the commissioning.

Helmut had a presentation on LEP related work in the FCC-ee physics week https://indico.cern.ch/event/1066234 and works on using field maps for the FCC-ee interaction region. He helps to provide machine information for the ATLAS/ALFA analysis of the 2018 low energy high-beta run and mentions the KTAP parameter that is currently lost when going to a thin lattice. Riccardo says this is followed with Ghislain and others to implement KTAP also in higher order magnets (octupoles) and multipoles.

Joschua looks into amplitude detuning and higher multipole corrections. He noticed a different behavior of sign changes by the MAD-X BV flag in twiss and error calculations that is currently not documented in the MAD-X user guide.

Leon works with Andrea Latina on the radiation issue for solenoids and a comparison with thin lattice descriptions. He prepares the alignment optics for RUN3 and aims to provide a full set to OP by the end of this week.

Ewen works on commissioning preparations with modeling, (non-linear) optics corrections and mentions efforts on the extraction of trim histories in collaboration with OP.

Tobias started hardware commissioning shifts, so far all going well, rather ahead of schedule. He follows up on optics corrections based on FIDEL, also aiming at stabilizing coupling corrections at injection.

Riccardo checks multipoles with radiation, found and fixed a missing (1+delta) term, removing inconsistencies observed in damping in tracking. There still appear to be issues related to EMIT for thin lattices.
He works on the K0 / angle consistency important also for work at E-RHIC. With the help of Tobias he plans to update the MAD-X html manual to the latest release. Work continues on the HL-LHC layout and running scenarios.

Laurent continues his efforts related to MAD-NG, including normal forms and vector field computations. He plans to provide a tool box with MAD-NG. 9GB of FIDEL data are now available from CERNBOX. The X-suite connection will come with a student. He follows up with Frank Schmidt on space charge and combined function magnets.
In the following discussion it was said a meeting between experts should be organized (after the LHC recommissioning) to follow up on FIDEL and the transition from WISE to JISE.

A regular LNO meeting will be planned soon, maybe already for next week.
