Measurements based on tracks of charged particles offer superior angular resolution and are robust under contamination from pile-up. They are sensitive to hadronization effects, which can be modeled in Monte Carlo parton showers. I will present an alternative to obtain predictions for track-based observables using track functions (a generalization of fragmentation functions). This provides a systematically improvable framework, and we recently took the first steps in extending it to order alpha_s^2. I will also discuss several applications, including the azimuthal decorrelation in V+jet and energy correlators.
