Description

In 2020 the US Department of Energy announced its intention to build the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Immediately, an EIC project team consisting of scientists from BNL and Jefferson Laboratory was formed and project moved forward. It has gone through important critical decisions and evaluations since then and poised to start construction in 2025 culminating in first collisions in early 2030. In this talk I will present an overview of the scientific motivation of the project, both for high-energy particle and nuclear physicists, and the project status. I will conclude with highlights of opportunities for early career scientist (graduate students, post docs and faculty) to influence the machine and detector design and do physics at this facility as future leaders in the field.
