Seminar on Precision Physics and Fundamental Symmetries

Present and future: Electron Electric Dipole Moment measurements at JILA

by Prof. Eric Cornell (JILA)

Europe/Zurich
Description

A measurement of a nonzero electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) would be  evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model, while an improved limit consistent with zero would provide an additional constraint on properties of hypothetical new particles in the range of tens of TeV.   At JILA we are within a few months of completing our second generation measurement. This summer we anticipate announcing a new eEDM measurement with precision of a several times 10^{-30} e-cm, modestly better than the current best limit.

Also this summer hope to see our first trapped ions in  a prototype version of a third generation experiment capable of precision in the few times 10 ^{-31} e-cm regime.  I'll discuss both projects, and mention an analysis of possible time-varying effects as a probe of axion physics.
