Abstract: This talk will present the basic accelerator septa requirements and identify the need for both electrostatic as well as magnetic devices. For both families, the limiting aspects are identified, which should lead to the choice of the most appropriate variant for each application. Subsequently, various topologies will be reviewed, and their strong and weak points will be explained. Finally, the state of the presently pursued R&D threads are briefly indicated.
