Description

Abstract

The COVID-19 epidemic highlighted the lack of high quality medical equipment in low and middle-income countries. It demonstrated that medical ventilators are financially inaccessible in many hospital settings, and the need for diversified solutions which can deliver ICU level performance persists.

The High Energy physics Ventilator (HEV) is a high-quality, low-cost, versatile ventilator, which was originally designed by a team of CERN scientists and collaborating institutes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The HEV design provides standard ICU ventilatory modes, is capable of supporting spontaneous breathing and supplying oxygen-enriched air and can be combined with an external air supply for use in situations where compressed air is not readily available. The functionality was developed with a focus on safety and performance.

In 2021, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), awarded funding to a collaboration between the UK, Brazil and CERN to redesign the HEV, working towards the goal of making high quality medical equipment more widely available in low and middle-income countries.  The High Performance Low Cost Ventilator (HPLV) further advances the HEV development towards regulatory approval and commercial implementation. The mechanics, electronics and software are re-engineered to improve robustness and to meet international regulatory requirements and are tested in Brazilian settings. HPLV can be taken to market by a commercial company with a much lower than normal barrier to entry primarily in terms of time (for regulatory approval) but also with a concomitant cost saving.

We describe the HEV conceptual design and the performance evaluation of the prototypes and the HPLV further development towards commercial implementation and adaptations for low- and middle-income countries with a focus on Brazil.
