4. News

Sweden :

TE: G. Riddone (GR) has described plans to install 3 CLIC modules, (type 8 acc, 4 acc, 0 acc).    First module planned to be installed summer 2011.  RR: official name for this phase "TBTS phase 3".   GR says might need to use TBTS PETS -> end of TBTS as we know it summer 2011?   R. Corsini: optimistic summer 2011, probably later.   TE: will lose possibilities to do kick measurement, once first module is in.  TE: CERN management wants Uppsala to specify experiments to be done.  Best to present something in CTF3 committee meeting 20. May.    KO: EuCARD supports the CLIC test module, and NorduCLIC partners are indirectly involved, with SEM tests (Uppsala Post.Doc).    Uppsala considers taking the role of technical coordinator for TBTS phase 3, application has been filed.

RR: EuCARD post.doc. employed (Tomoko), two posts opened (Post.Doc. and researcher,  NorduCLIC / FlashBox).  Whether both posts will be filled depends on applicants.

ESS:

TE: Uppsala univ. management shows considerable support, but apart from that, status quo since last meeting, lacking still 20-30 MSEK (TE), will try to get more from Wallenberg/ESS.   Uppsala. management must take final decision by somewhere in June.

TIARA:

TE: Cheese slicing to reduce cost, due to grant of only 3.9 MEUR instead of 6 MEUR.

Finland:

WIll start European network from 1. of September  (1 MEUR), 5 people (CERN pays 4 + technical coordinator (as discussed in previous) + post.doc. governed by CERN.

Norway:

ESS: SS has tried to take contact with Norwegian coordinator for ESS activities, no real discussions yet (planned soon).

RR/TE: Norway should express real interest by August in order to get "a nice piece" of the work.

5. Updates on core NorduCLIC program

Norway:

A new opportunity has come up to enter core design of CLIC accelerating structure, that is also compatible with the CLIC structure development management, according to Walter Wuench (WW).   WW believes the new suite of accelerator simuation codes, ACE3P deveped at SLAC, shows very high promise for the future, and they are very interested in transferring the rf design work to these codes (in parallel with on-going HFSS efforts), however, they are looking for manpower.  Code :

in suite

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/grp/acd/ace3p.html

(codes are also relevant for break down studies)

We are in discussion with a very good candidate for a Ph.D. in rf-design and simulation, currently a Master student in the EPF-group at the University of Oslo (to which SS and EA belongs).   He has both an excellent background (strong in computational physics, experience from CERN test-beams) and is very motivated.  He could start in late Autumn 2010, funding details are still to be finalized, but it looks promising.

In parallel we have been in discussions with the ACE3P developers, and they would be happy to support a new user/Ph.D. student to use their codes.  An account on an American super-computer could be made available to start the work.  Eventually, one could consider using Nordic resources, but this will be a larger effort.

This allows the Oslo group to take on a role compatible with the originally proposed NorduCLIC core programme, where the Oslo group will provide rf design for CLIC accelerating structures, and the goal is to provide several rf designs during the course of the Ph.D. study.   The dirction of the design improvement is still to be decided.  The first rf design would probably be close to the accelerator structure baseline design,  eventually with small modifications.

TE/RR: important to talk to Grudjev to hear his view on the role for such a student, even if WW sems supportive.

EA: will do.

Finland:

Interest to work in break down and 12TS.  PhD student will go in direction to break down measurement.  Evnt. Finnish involvement in the Test module.   Details have not yet been settled.

Sweden:

[From slides VZ]

Hire one, maybe two researchers/postdocs.

Commission TBTS and especially the flashbox to

see what we can learn about diagnostics for the

12 Ghz test-stand (12TS). Task for RR,AP,VZ.

Longitudinal electron spectrum/profile on flashbox

plates (Andrea or researcher)

Ion spectrum and plasma parameters (Andrea).

Electron as reliable signal to indicate breakdown.

Transfer of the experience to the 12TS.

Get drawings of 12TS vacuum tank from Karl Schirm and

start adding diagnostics to it.

Vacuum measurements with laser

Need to establish laser competence for mode-locked laser

systems.

How much does the dispersion dn/dλ of a rarefied gas modify the

pulse length of the mode locked laser pulse (this should be very

delicate and therefore sensitive to perturbations, here vacuum

conditions, but how much?)

Gunther Geschonke suggested to establish connection with

an external university who is interested in collaborating with CTF3. We should do this!

[Other comments]

New NorduCLIC person will learn from TBTS flash-box and then design experiments for the 12TS.

6. Next meeting

A NorduCLIC mini-workshop (one day) will be organized at CERN, Wednesday 16/6, from 0900-1500 (including lunch), with the purpose of detailing the NorduCLIC program, and also to introduce new people, .  This is the day before the monthly CTF3 Meeting.

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
