Description

News of the week will be followed by a seminar given by Heinz Haas: Temperature dependence of electric-field gradient in Zn and Cd: ending the T3/2 “myth”

The abstract can be found here:

The existing experimental data for the temperature dependence of the nuclear quadrupole interaction of 111Cd (5/2+) in Zn and Cd have been accounted for by using reanalyzed data for structure and vibrational amplitude as function of temperature, in combination with density functional calculations of the static electric-field gradient (efg). For Zn the complex efg temperature effect, previously unexplained, can be fully reproduced, while for Cd it is shown that the earlier proposed temperature dependence as proportional to T-3/2 is due to a combination of structural and vibrational effects. The data for several impurity systems are discussed in the new perspective. It is demonstrated that, for Zn in particular, the resulting nuclear quadrupole moments can be considerably different when taking the revised analysis into account.
