BGV x R2E/FLUKA meeting
Collection of questions/discussion points:
- Table with radiation levels at which different electronic equipment should be tested (see below)?
- Alessio from the vacuum group simulated a longer section of the future BGV2 vacuum section - differences in profile: may explain benchmark discrepancy; we also understood that proximity of sector valves and cryogenic equipment can significantly affect the gas profile -> with the profile I provided is good for a first estimate of radiation level, maybe for quenching limits and so on can be worth estimating with the final profiles? (The simulation won't be done before the review).
- Operation time of the BGV: should be closer to 400h/year (considering a minimum of 2h/fill).
- For B1 locations, were the simulations done with the demo or updated BGV pressure profile? (does it actually make a significant difference? Actually is the profile shape important or only the pressure integrated over the length?)
- Are the quadrupole cryogenic? (Q5, Q6, Q7)
- Radiations to BGV ion pumps
- B1-BGV Pos2 (left IP4):
- Should we communicate power levels to magnet owners? seem to be small values to me but no idea if it would have an impact on their lifetime / operation. Also, for 400h of operation, can we just x2 those values?
- Do I understand correctly that BGV radiations to RF cav would be in the background of the rest of what it received during Run 2? Would it still be the case for 400h operation / year?
- Do you think the showers could have an impact on the beam operation?
Update:
From JS email to Andrea Boccardi: Annual radiation dose to BI equipment that could be affected by the secondary radiation coming from a BGV installed in LSSR4 between Q5 and Q6 (at +142.5 m/IP). Additional irradiation of:
BPLX at ~148 m/IP
BCTDC at ~153 m/IP
BCTFR at ~156 m/IP
BPLH at ~163 m/IP
BGSH/V at ~173 m/IP
BPH/V at ~177 m/OP
Our question : Can they indicate the location of radiation sensitive equipment that should be studied?
AB: electronics in the mentioned area is in the alcoves, and therefore we do not have any active parts that could be affected by the BGV. The only elements that would be irradiated are the adaptors filters on the BPM itself, but those are passive, and if the level of radiation is so high to be a concern for them, we should also consider evaluating the cables.
Q: Total Ionising Dose per year of order 100 Gy per year a problem?
AB: The level start to be relatively high, but 1kGy over 10 years should still be ok.
