Description

Chair: Jose Castro Leon Secretary: Elena Gazzarrini

Regular meeting between IT department and computing experts from protoDUNE. The meeting goals are:

  • Exchange technical information related to computing for the Experiment
  • Provide requested technical details on IT services
  • Highlight problems related to IT services
  • Follow up on items raised at the meetings and record them on an action list

IT-protoDUNE coordination meeting 02-11-2022

Attendance

  • Denis PUGNERE (protoDUNE)
  • Elisabetta PENNACCHIO (protoDUNE)
  • Steven Timm (protoDUNE)
  • Jose CASTRO LEON (IT)
  • Elena Gazzarrini (IT)

Minutes and Action items from previous meetings

  • (Steven) Was not there last time, so what is ASDF?
  • (Jose) Services and Discussion forums. Have a look in Indico.

Coordination News

  • (Jose) Two items:
    • Accelerator sector requested IT to provide infra to run jobs to do FPGA and system design. Need central provisioning. If you want to get onboarded please let us know.
    • Using EOSPUBLIC upgrade to EOS5 and XrootD5, some experiments did not want upgrade during data taking. Let
  • (Steven) 14-18th Nov data pipeline running, would be better not then.
  • (Jose) they will not do it until the end of month/beginning of December.
  • (Steven) Do we need to upgrade EOS client? We are still using FUSE mount.
  • (Jose) Will check with them.
  • (Elisabetta) We are taking data now. End of November is a relatively quiet period, so in principle it should be fine. You said it should be stopped for 5 mins?
  • (Jose) Yes, almost transparent. NA61 and NA62 were concerned.

IT Information Update

Round table and action list review

  • (Steven)
    • Implementing DAQ system and trying to stress the pipeline all the way up to EOS (14-18 Nov). Big activity will be noticeable.
    • NP04 and NP02 have until now been using the DUNE VOMS server, but the DUNE collaboration is interested in getting a CERN ID to have VOMS hosted on the CERN site. Will submit a request to IAM to get authenticated properly to the DUNE server.
    • We are trying to access EOSPUBLIC with voms-proxy, but is there an alternative way to authenticate?
  • (Elisabetta)
    • Taking data now, using FTS and EOSPUBLIC. No issue. No particular requests.
    • (Jose) Quota is fine?
    • At the moment, yes. Right now, cold box data taking. Next year (April) we have NP04 running and will need to reverify with Steven and Kirby. At the moment, NP02 a lot of raw data is still available on EOS. Once the campaign finishes, we will need to clean up so we might come up with new requests.
    • (Steven) We rotated test runs but there was a guy at neutrino platform who managed to get a lot of CERN resources. Next time we need to figure out who this guy was. When protoDUNE makes requests it should come from the neutrino platform.
    • (Elisabetta) Xavi was also setting up all of the egroups for this.
    • (Jose) If you need more resources, I can interface with CERN.
    • (Steven) There are dask and storage resources. Denis Clark will contact you soon, I will give your email.
  • (Dennis) nothing new to report.

Current Actions

  • About EOSPUBLIC upgrade: check if they need to update the EOS clients.
  • DUNE security team will be requesting VOMS or IAM at the CERN site.

New Actions

  • None

      • FPGA/SoC Designs

The ATS requested from IT to provide and support a scalable infrastructure for running Gitlab CI jobs for (Hardware Description Language) HDL development, namely for FPGA/SoC Designs. The infrastructure is most probably going to run on VM cluster. IT has to provide also central support for a set of docker images that ship the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software to the runners.

In odder, to decide if we are going to materialise this project, we need to prepare a Project Scope Objective(PSO) document that will be proposed to the ATS-IT Technical Committee (TC). The ATS-IT engagement team and the engineering project colleagues in IT are targeting the next TC on the 22nd of November, which means that they envision the 15th of November as a deadline to finalise the PSO document for this project.

Please find attached the preliminary proposal for the project written by the ATS and the IT colleagues.

If you are interested in using such a service, provided by the IT department, could you please come back to us relatively shortly? It will be nice if we can include the RCS requirements for such an infrastructure in this initial version of the PSO. If the timescale permits it, we can organise also a meeting between the interested groups in the RCS, in the ATS and the engineering colleagues in the IT department.

      • EOSPUBLIC upgrade to EOS5 and XrootD5
The EOS team would like to upgrade EOSPublic during the November timeframe, what would be the most suitable date for this intervention from your side ?

These new major versions include: security improvements, early detection
of errors for big file transfers with the block-level checksums, improvements for token support, etc.

The intervention will degrade the availability of the service for ~5 min.
The ongoing write and read requests, which were sent before the upgrade,
      shall continue mostly uninterrupted.
