Description

NorCC Seminar series
The seminar series at NorCC takes place the third Tuesday every month, usually at 12AM CET, and invites both external an internal speakers. Each seminar will be maximum one hour and is an arena to present and discuss a range of topics reflecting the different fields within the centre.

What is NorCC?

The Norwegian Centre for CERN-related research is a national centre which aims to organize and finance the Norwegian participation in the large and long-term experiments at CERN. This translates into pioneering research in particle and nuclear physics, exploration of new technology and development of networks and opportunities. We will also focus on training the new generation of scientists and engineers and prepare them for the road ahead.

Convolutional neural networks and explainability 1h

We will have a look at what convolutional networks are and what motivates their use, which can be understood using a bit of mathematical intuition. But although their parts are simple, modern networks have become wildly complex, which calls for methods that explain their decision process. Armed with our mathematical understanding from first-year calculus class, we go through the workings of explanation methods for this type of networks, and have a look at challenges that lie ahead.

Speaker: Dr Steffen Maeland (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences)
