Description
We will discuss some seemingly unrelated aspects of global and gauged symmetries in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, focusing on discrete gauge symmetries. This will lead to new insights about the classification of cosmic strings. It will also allow a unified and streamlined version of two conjectures about quantum gravity: all symmetries are gauged and all consistent charges are present in the spectrum. Finally, our discussion about string charges and symmetries will provide a more physical and more complete understanding of recently found consistency conditions of supergravity.
