Workshop on the CPR for cables

The European Commission (EC) published the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), used to regulate the placing on the market of materials to be installed in buildings and infrastructures. The requirements therein touch, among others, the fire performance of cables. In 2017, the EC has made it compulsory to have all cables placed on the EU market to have a CPR class (with a Declaration of Performance) and CE Marking. Following this regulatory update, and couple with the will to prescribe industrially-recongnised standards to cable specifications at CERN, the HSE Unit proposed an update of the CERN Safety Rule on this topic. In December 2021, the rule was accepted and published: SSI-FS-2-1-1.

After more than a year using the new rule, a set of questions have been raised regarding the implementation of CPR at CERN.

In order to address these issues, HSE Unit invited a global leader in cable testing and certification services for power, energy, data/signal cables and ancillary products - BASEC - in order to help solve some of the issues we currently face. BASEC is also a Notified Product Certification Body for System 1+ and a Notified Test Laboratory for System 3 for the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). They can provide testing, classification, product certification and factory production control certification to cable manufacturers and distributors worldwide enabling clients to achieve compliance to the requirements of the CPR for their power, control, communications and other cables. This covers all types of cable including data, fibre optic, control, installation and power distribution.

The workshop is intended for those in charge of preparing and reviewing technical specifications for cables, as well as to Safety Officers within their role to fulfil the Departments' / Experiments' obligations in matters of Safety.

The workshop has 3 main objectives:

  • Better understand applicability of CPR and its importance
  • How to optimize cable specifications for CERN-specific purchases
  • Discuss the current regulatory framework at CERN
