Description

HYBRID SEMINAR IN 13-2-005 AND ZOOM

Abstract:

The Muon-Central-Trigger-Processor-Interface (MUCTPI) is part of the Level-1 trigger system of ATLAS and interfaces the output from the muon trigger detectors to the Central Trigger Processor (CTP). A completely new MUCTPI was designed and commissioned as part of the Level-1 trigger upgrade for Run-3. It is implemented based on the AdvancedTCA (ATCA) standard and uses high-end FPGAs and high-density fibre optic transmitters and receivers. A single ATCA blade replaces the legacy system consisting of 18 9U VME boards. The MUCTPI board features over 270 multi-gigabit serial optical links to receive trigger data from the muon detectors and to send the processed information to downstream parts of the trigger system. Three high-end Xilinx Ultrascale(+) FPGAs are used for real-time processing of trigger data as well as for generating summary information to the data acquisition system and for online monitoring. An on-board System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA running an embedded Linux operating system is used for control, configuration and monitoring of the MUCTPI module. The new MUCTPI has been installed and commissioned in the ATLAS experiment and has been operating reliably since the start of Run-3. We present the hardware design and implementation of the MUCTPI module as well as our experience with the use of ATCA and an on-board SoC.
