Abstract: With the LIGO observatory back in operation for its fourth observing run, the number of detections of gravitational waves emitted by coalescing compact binaries is increasing on a weekly basis. Gravitational waveform models are a key element for the data-analysis pipelines we employ to interpret these signals. One popular family of template waveforms is that of so-called phenomenological models, where the complexity of the full coalescence is reduced as much as possible to simple analytic closed form expressions. I will describe the status of these models and discuss some work in progress to improve even further their ability to characterise gravitational-wave sources.
