Abstract: In this talk, after a short introduction on gravitational waves, I will summarise the status of gravitational wave astronomy with the actual generation of terrestrial detectors LIGO, Virgo and Kagra and I will discuss the science potential of the next generation detector Einstein Telescope. I will also briefly introduce the data analysis challenges due to the improvement of the sensitivity.
