SUBJECT: Meeting with PAEC to define the scope of the collaboration

A technical visit to PAEC early 2024 is envisaged, this visit will provide an opportunity to discuss ongoing technical topics.

1. Dummy girder:

The aim of the collaboration would be to initially build a version optimised according to the specifications of a 2 m long girder which would be used in the first mock up. If possible, also make 0.5 m long dummy sextupoles to complete the mock up and which would respect the mass of the real sextupoles.

In general, CERN can provide material and PAEC machine and assemble, but this is reasonable only in case of special materials or special standard requirements, otherwise there is no advantage, and it is more suitable to use a material from there.

In the case of the girder, there are no specifications concerning the material, it is up to PAEC to make a proposal which will then be analysed.

There are no problems for them also to produce structures longer than 6 m with good tolerances.

Regarding the specifications given in the presentation, it should be noted that the mass is intended as an upper limit mass (same for flatness).

It would be interesting to check what has already been done as part of the HGCAL project, where the specifications for the material should be used as a reference. Moreover, there are 2 m long cradles with good tolerances already built by PAEC as part of CMS.

At first sight they propose to send us a designer working on this subject. The mock-up team thought that either CERN would provide the design and PAEC would produce the girder, or PAEC would design and produce the girder with periodic meetings about the progress and guidance.

2. Magnets:

The aim of the collaboration would be to initially build a 1 or 2 m long collider dipole to validate the magnetic design. Then, to build a 12 m long collider dipole. It would consist of a functional prototype that would enable its magnetic and mechanical functions to be verified and its manufacture to be assessed.

As part of the collaboration, it is proposed to build 3 short quadrupole models (1 m long) with latest design, each with the pole pieces produced with different technologies: one with cast pure iron; one with laminated assembly, one with solid iron.

Actions follow up

  1. PAEC should make us a proposal on how they intend to produce, with costs etc. (design, production, shipping, etc.)
  2. Federico/Audrey will also add timeline to the slides. Add also sketch of the dummy mock-up and the possibility of producing a dummy sextupoles (hollow profile with similar weight, to be specified by Audrey). List at the end what we propose to produce.
  3. Audrey will share the Indico link to PAEC and E. Tsesmelis.
There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
