What will participants learn?

 

Part 1: Getting More Women in STEM Careers

 

  • Ellen Walker, founder of the nonprofit, RightsTech Women, will share about the need to get more women working in data science, on climate change issues.

 

  • A representative of CERN Women in Technology will share her career perspectives and experience of working in computing and data science at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

 

Part 2: Technical training 

 

Technical coaches from CERN Micro Club and CERN Women in Technology will introduce participants to how they can apply pictures of Earth taken from space to understand climate change in their local area and around the world.

  • We will introduce them to satellite imagery and the process of working with such data to investigate their own questions.
  • We will introduce them to Google Earth Engine, an open platform that can be used to visualize and understand climate trends such as deforestation, temperature change, and extreme events.
