Abstract: There are several issues in magnet design which are still open, and the scientific community has not find consensus about their solution. In this seminar I will give my personal view on what are the main aspects that we still do not understand, and their relevance for future projects at CERN. In the first part I will focus on aspects related to the needed prestress in accelerator magnet, the relation between prestress and to performance, the evolution of prestress during cool-down and the main options for the mechanical structure.
