8.01 ROOT Team Meeting 

 News 

- Plan of Work Talk - at the SFT meeting on Monday 15.01.24: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1341656/
- ciculation of the slides outside of the group on Wednesday
- 3 action items for the team (see the slide), extra: add significant items that are not in PoW but were done in 2023
- ACAT - 4 abstracts submitted 
- 16th and 17th - individual chats with Danilo
- Path to ROOT 7 (email sent on the 18th of Dec) - call for Focus Area chairs 
- the Fixathon at CERN Idea Square - let's reduce the backlog, requires some preparation, selection of issues etc 
    - maybe two days? (Vincenzo)
    - look at parts of ROOT that we don't usually look at (Jacob)
    - what about the PRs belonging to the people who left the team? - another dedicated day, set of days to do that? let's keep that in mind as well 
- Summer Students 
    - time to prepare projects! 
    - call closes on Jan 26th or Jan 31st 
    - funded by either SS programme or Openlab or GSOC
- Shifts - all non-student members should do it
- Start keeping track of all talks we give at ACAT or CHEP or other meetings/conferences 
    - for sure some internal document 
- ROOT Team Meeting - improve efficiency 
    - signal important items in the shared document before the meeting
    - to be filled in before 2pm on Monday 
- Computing power - report if needed, so that we don't waste time worrying about things like disk space etc. (recently reported by Philippe)

Shift handover 

- builds - a few problems 
- nightlies steered by Jenkins and github actions 
- unified system for CI would be ideal 

Topics 

- PR - quick fix by Vincenzo, work done to cure 6.30 effect - very slow start-up of PyROOT because of opening and closing files because of the symbol search 
- another PR provided by Vassil - many comments from Jonas H. - still a few points to be fixed (split the PRs into those that revert the quick fix and the ones that are introducing the real changes)

• PR reducing symbol search that causes slow ROOT and PyROOT startup https://github.com/root-project/root/pull/14287 (CMS needs this feature to pick up 6.30, we have workarounds in place but it would be preferable to fix the issue at its root)
