General info

The meeting will take place in person and everyone is invited to the Council Chamber.
However, if you will not be able to attend in person, there is a Zoom room to participate remotely.

Mission Statement

The main objective of the Club is to be a focal point for climbers at CERN to meet and organise their activities, to share information about climbing locations and facilities in the region, and to organise social and cultural events that promote climbing as a way of integrating in the wider CERN community. 

Furthermore, the club aims to encourage safe practices by organising, in collaboration with local guides and local climbing gyms, climbing and safety courses for beginners and by informing its members on insurance solutions.

An annual membership fee of 20 CHF is required by the members, in order to support club activities.

Committee:

• President: Chairs meetings, oversees day to day activities, approves new memberships and generates membership cards, general team management.
• Secretary: Writes and distributes minutes for each meeting, manages the member list.
• Treasurer: Manages the accounts and finances, including the annual audit and report.
• Activities Manager: Responsible for outings and other social events, as discussed below;
• Communications Manager: Responsible for official communications of the club with its members and the broader CERN community. Ideally fluent in English and in French;
• Equipment Manager: Responsible for the website, barracks space, physical assets, including library of climbing guidebooks and any other equipment.
• Inter-Club Liaison: Connect the CERN Climbing Club with other climbing associations/clubs in the region (e.g. CAF) and foster those relationships.

Club Activities:

The members of the club are amateur climbers, without any formal climbing training. In view of this, the CERN Climbing Club does not directly organise any climbing activities but rather serves as an intermediary, organising climbing courses and other activities via local climbing guides and gyms.

In particular, the CERN Climbing Club:

• Promotes regular outings to local bouldering and sport climbing gyms, where CERN climbers can meet and climb in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of trained personnel;
• Organises climbing courses, given by qualified professionals. Courses are specifically targeted for the CERN community (possibility of courses in English, preferential prices for club members, etc);
• Maintains and makes available to its members, a library with guidebooks, training plans, and climbing topos (schematic drawings/photos of climbing routes) for local climbing locations;
• Maintains a place at CERN a small space with equipment for finger, arm and body core strength training (e.g. hangboards, pull up bars, rings), provided the necessary space can be found;
• Organises film viewings and talks around the theme of climbing/mountain sports as well as other community building events;
• Negotiates with local gyms preferential prices for its members.
