Industry Workshop on Cryogenics in Big Science

Organised and supported by I.FASTAIDAinnova and LEAPS-INNOV, the European INFRA-INNOV projects for particle accelerators, detectors, photon science

An industrial workshop on “Cryogenics in Big Science”, to be held in Paris on April 16 and 17 2024, is organized in the framework of the European Projects I.FAST, AIDAinnova and LEAPS-INNOV.

The projects support the development of innovative technologies in collaboration with companies all over Europe, in the fields of accelerators, detectors for particle and nuclear physics, and light sources, respectively. The main motivation of the workshop is that continuous and fruitful interactions with industry are fundamental to the activities conducted by the projects, and workshops on specific technical topics of common interest provide key occasions for mutual updating, deepening of collaboration, and facilitating new partnerships.

Today, the transition to a green and sustainable economy including transport, power, and generation, storage, and transmission of energy has opened new perspectives for the extended exploitation of cryogenic technologies and is driving the development of ever more efficient approaches being actively pursued also in the design of the next generation of very large scientific instruments. The possible synergies between these efforts have been the main reason the I.FAST Industry Advisory Board has recommended choosing Cryogenics as the topic of the 2024 industry workshop.

For more than 70 years, cryogenic technologies have played an increasingly critical key role in various fields of basic and applied science, industry, and medicine facilitating discoveries and commercial opportunities, otherwise not possible. The ability to maintain large equipment at extremely low temperatures has allowed the construction of extraordinary tools that have enabled spectacular advances in our scientific knowledge, from the finest structure of matter to the scale of the universe.

The workshop is a great opportunity to present and discuss the latest developments in the field, which are crucial for achieving the challenging goals that Big Science laboratories and their industrial partners are heading towards. It will illustrate the next business opportunities that will open in the coming years, and it will address the possibilities of strengthening collaborations, also through the allocation of specific time for direct 1:1 meetings.
